6 Ultimate Cakes to Try in Seoul

Let’s face it, cake is delicious and if you’ve never had it before… you should start now because you have a lot of catching up to do. I myself am a dancer who goes to the gym regularly and believes that eating healthy is very important, but I am also a “live to eat” kind of girl. So, that being said, I’d like to share with you 6 ultimate cakes to try when you’re in Seoul.

Red Velvet

  • 8 1/2
  • 서울특별시 마포구 서교동 411-18 102
  • ₩4,800

Red Velvet is one of my favorite types of cake, so I pretty much try a slice anywhere that offers it. I’ve had a few good ones here in Seoul, but the best by far has been at 8 1/2. The cake consists of two layer of soft, moist red velvet cake and two layers of rich creamy cream cheese frosting. Visually, it’s a simple clean-cut cake, but what it lacks in presentation it more than makes up for in taste. The cake itself has a slight hint of honey that lingers on the tongue and the frosting is thick, sweet and really brings the entire cake together.Red VelvetRed Velvet (closeup)

Earl Gray Cake

  • Decoa Balim
  • 서울특별시 마포구 서교동 411-6 1층
  • ₩5,500

Anything tea flavored is an absolute must try in my book. Very rarely am I disappointed by anything earl grey flavored and the Earl Grey Cake at Decoa Balim is certainly no exception. This hunk of deliciousness is three layers of the moistest cake I’ve ever had (without being soggy). From the moment you cut into it, you can hear the moisture and see the tea gently seeping out. You can also see the specks of tea leaves generously sprinkled throughout. This is complimented by three dividing layers of lightly whipped cream cheese frosting, creating a perfect balance of sweetness and bold tea flavor. Topping off this delicate dessert is a light rim of crushed pistachios along the top, crunchy snack flakes along the bottom and a juicy strawberry as the crown jewel.Earl Gray CakeEarl Gray Cake (front)

Caramel Cake

  • Billy Angel
  • 서울 마포구 서교동 343-9
  • ₩6,500

Bill Angel’s Caramel Cake is the ultimate cake for caramel lovers everywhere! This five layer cake consists of two layers of light and creamy caramel cream cheese sandwiched between three dense, yet soft caramel infused layers of cake. Rather than topping it off with a traditional frosting, it’s smothered with a thick gooey layer of melted caramel and topped off with a single piece of caramel. This cake is incredibly sweet and will be sure to give you the sugar high of your life. Caramel fanatics will adore it, others may want to tread lightly.Caramel CakeCaramel Cake (closeup)

S’mores Cake

I don’t know if you could call a cake sexy, but if you could… then the S’mores cake from Vanilla Kitchen is definitely one sexy cake! Those with a stronger sweet tooth in search of a denser, sweeter cake need look no further than here. This cake is three towering layers of thick chocolate cake, stacked with layers of roasted marshmallow, dark chocolate ganache and a specially made graham cracker frosting.  All of this is topped off with bits of roasted marshmallows, pretzels and mine reeses peanut butter cups. I’m not really a huge chocolate lover, but this cake blew me and my taste buds away and it just might do the same for you.S'moresS'mores

Banana in the Nutella

  • Pumpkin Terrier
  • 서울시 강남구 도산대로 15길 41
  • ₩8,000

I don’t think I could ever put into words just how much I love Nutella. I suppose it’s become a bit of an addiction. So for those of you who share my “problem,” I give to you the Banana in the Nutella cake from Pumpkin Terrier. This cake is 3 layers of Nutella infused chocolate cake divided by layers of smooth fluffy Nutella frosting and chunks of fresh banana. It is garnished with caramel popcorn, crispy chocolate clusters, fried banana and shards of toffee, all of which are made in-house. Although the cake and frosting are both made with Nutella, giving it a very distinct flavor, it’s not too rich or sweet. The frosting is also very light, almost like whip cream, taking away from any heaviness you might expect from this type of cake. A true slice of heaven.Banana in the NutellaBanana in the Nutella (closeup)

소중해케이크 (“You Are My Precious” Cake)

  • Doré Doré
  • 강남구 도산대로15길 40
  • ₩9,000

This spectacularly colorful cake gives new meaning to the phrase “taste the rainbow,” and is the signature cake at Doré Doré. The humorously titled “You Are My Precious” cake is six towering layers of perfectly moist cake layered in-between a  delicious soft and fluffy fresh cream frosting. Despite its flashy appearance, the taste is actually quite simple and clean. Both the cake and frosting are lightly sweetened, making it the ideal cake for anyones taste buds. Honestly, once you have a bite, it’s incredibly hard to stop. This beautiful cake will definitely bring out the Smeagol in anyone. You Are My Precious (closeup)You Are My Precious

  1. Hello! Please give Oliversweet cakes a try. They have four stores in Seoul: two at Hyundai department stores (apkujong, COEX), one at Banpo-dong, and one at K Twin Tower near Gwangwhamun. You won’t be disappointed!

    • does the one in K twin tower still there for FRANK or is a pop up store do u know?
Like to know their alternative stores other than the one in itaewon which is not so accessible
