Continuing with my quest to fill you with the spirit of Halloween, I can finally share a place with you that I have kept on the back burner for quite some time now. I’d like to introduce you to Monster Cupcakes! While you may not find any tricks here… you can definitely get your fill of treats.
Monster Cupcakes are what delicious nightmares are made of. Nuzzled inside a tiny store in 이태원 (Itaewon), you will find walls crawling with fuzzy spiders, a random assortment of horror movie trinkets and nicknacks scattered about and a huge E.T. doll waiting to greet you at the door. If that’s not creepy enough for you, there is also a Chucky doll standing on the counter who I try not to make eye contact with. It’s more of a take-out place, than a sit-in cafe, but there are two tables (one inside and one outside) if you choose to stay and enjoy the ghoulish ambiance and fantastic smells.
As for the cupcakes… they are all very nicely decorated, in a cute and creepy kind of way. It’s really hard not to be drawn to their unique charm. Not only that, but they are actually quite tasty too. The base of each cupcake is moist and has body and the frosting is light and fluffy, almost like whipped cream. So far, my favorite cupcake is the cinnamon apple. It may not be the spookiest of the bunch, but it reminds me of Snow White and the poisoned apple so I guess that kind of keeps with the Halloween theme. Anyhow, the base is mostly cinnamon flavored, but it does have little bits of apple in it as well. The frosting is light, but it also has a hint of cream cheese (which I prefer) and is dusted with cinnamon and topped off with a pretzel-stemmed meringue apple.
Cupcake prices range from ₩4,300~₩5,000 a piece. They are a bit pricey, but a decent size and delicious. In addition, they make gift sets and take special orders. So if you wanna get something really cool for that halloween party you’re throwing, this would be the place to go to. Also, if you need something to wash it all down with they have a small selection of drinks. I don’t usually get anything, but their flavored aids are quite popular and they come in cool blood bags.
Despite the name, they do change up some of their cupcakes according to different holidays and seasons. I personally really like their signature Halloween selection, especially the Cookie Monster cupcakes. They’re too cute! So don’t miss your chance to sink your teeth into these frightful delights. Happy eating!
