Adorable Bird Cafe in Osaka: Kotori Cafe

My constant need to be in the company of animals always seems to take me to the most interesting places. From dogs and cats to owls and meerkats, I just can’t seem to get enough. This time around, I found myself in Osaka surrounded by some adorable new feathery friends.

Kotori Cafe is a cute little bird cafe that bares all the cuteness you would expect from a cafe in Japan. The space itself is relatively small with a glass bird enclosure at the center, so no matter where you sit, you have a nice view of the birds playing, eating and engaging in other bird activities.

There is also a rather generous space at the entrance of the cafe filled with an assortment of cute little souvenirs you can purchase. Pillows, books, plushies, and even the same cute cups and dishes the cafe uses. Though we had never been there before, my hubby had purchased some of their super warm socks for me on our last Osaka trip. He just happened to come across some of their merch at a gift shop. FYI, they are hands down the comfiest pair of socks I own.

Anyhow, like with most specialty cafes the prices for drinks and desserts are a bit on the higher side. Their drinks are all priced at 800 yen and come with a tasty complimentary cookie. I ordered an iced Café au lait. We also ordered a set, which came with a tart and a drink of our choice for 1,500 yen. There were 4 tarts to choose from, all insanely adorbs, but in the end I opted for the parakeet tart filled with yuzu and chocolate custard.  They even served it to us in a cute little bird cage. It was literally picture perfect. And as for the tart… it was as delicious as it was cute!

Now for the bird petting experience. Be warned, if you want a little one-on-one feathery cuteness time, it’s going to cost you. For 540 yen, you get 5 minutes with two birds. Yup just 5 minutes! That turned out to be 2.5 minutes with each bird and they have you on an actual timer too. Despite the price, I just couldn’t resist the urge to get my bird petting on.

So, they gave me a sheet of rules to read over and a number to hold on to until I was ready. Once I had scarfed down most of our tart, they took me to a separate room where I could choose 2 birds to pet (one at a time of course). The first bird was an adorable little blue parakeet who really did not like me… at all. The staff member tried really hard to get him to warm up to me, but he was just not having it. So after 2.5 minutes of me trying to unleash my inner Snow White and being brutally rejected, we moved on to the second bird.

The next bird was a cockatoo, but after being pecked at by a little parakeet, I was more than a little nervous about this encounter seeing how he had a MUCH larger beak. Fortunately, the cockatoo was basically a dog with feathers. He loved belly rubs and neck massages and I totally fell in love! Our time together was far too short, but I will cherish the memories we made (cue the cheesy music).

Personally, I’d say Kotori Cafe is more of a bird themed cafe rather than a bird cafe. While they do offer the option to pet some of the birds, most people went to simply enjoy the company of birds while eating some super cute tarts. This being the case, the atmosphere super calm and laid back. It was a nice change from your typical pet cafes.

So if you’re looking to spice up your Osaka trip with something a bit more outside of the box, I totally recommend this place. There are English menus, the staff members are super friendly and it really is a uniquely enjoyable way to take a break from all that walking. Coffee, tarts and loads of cuteness! What more could you ask for?
