Everything We Ate in Yeosu, South Korea – Part 2

Everything We Ate in Yeosu, South Korea – Part 2

We were only in Yeosu for three days. THREE DAYS and we ate more food in those three days than we do most weeks. And that’s why we travel. To break out of our regular habits and try something new.

So without further ado, here’s part 2 of Everything We Ate in Yeosu.

Seafood Pancake & Seafood Kalguksu

If we’re being honest, it felt a little sacrilegious to be eating any jeon (pancake) without makgeolli (Korean rice wine). But since we were driving, that wasn’t an option. That being said, the seafood pancake was amazing. This seafood pancake was loaded up with shrimp, squid and octopus along with a healthy serving of green onions.

We needed a dish to balance the oils of the pancake and seafood kalguksu sounded perfect. The knife cut noodles had a light chewy texture and having generous cuts of octopus, prawn and mussels added immensely to the flavor. Of course it was also accompanied by a bunch of local side dishes, which really rounded out the meal. Kalguksu is one of our favorite dishes and this restaurant cemented that standing even further.

Bungeoppang Pastry (redbean, sweet potato)

After a delicious meal overlooking the ocean, we needed to get some coffee. And, as always, satisfy a craving for sweets. Regular bungeoppang is great, but sometimes it’s nice to have a different variation. And these buttery flakey square-cut bungeoppang pastries went great with the coffee. We got red bean and sweet potato, and they totally hit the spot.

Braised Cutlassfish with Marinated Crabs (soy marinated and sweet/spicy)

Braised cutlassfish is an incredibly popular staple of Korean seafood. The fish is slow-cooked until it slides right off the bone. The set we ordered came with plenty of side dishes including two orders of marinated crab, one soy marinated and one sweet/spicy. While both marinated crabs were prepared to perfection, the soy crab was really hard to beat.

Kiss Ring

Every city has it. Some weird snack that has a weirder name and banners proclaiming itself to be the big thing in whatever city you happen to be in. So, when we walked past a bakery advertising Kiss Ring pastries, we laughed it off and kept walking. Eventually, our curiosity got the better of us, and on our last day we picked up a blueberry ‘Kiss Ring’ before heading back to the airport. And holy hell, we should’ve gotten it on day one. Picture a bagel-shaped croissant the size of a plate and you’ve got a good idea of what it is. And it tastes wonderful.
