Inside Seoul’s Delicious in Dungeon: Labyrinth Exploration Exhibition

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to walk through the world of Delicious in Dungeon, now’s your chance!

This summer, Seongsu is playing host to the Ryoko Kui Exhibition & Delicious in Dungeon: Labyrinth Exploration, marking the first time the acclaimed exhibition has come to Korea. Originally touring Japan to celebrate the hit manga and anime, the exhibition combines an art retrospective of creator Ryoko Kui’s work with an immersive dungeon experience inspired by Delicious in Dungeon (known in Japanese as Dungeon Meshi and Korean as Dungeon Bap).

The exhibition begins with a rare glimpse into Ryoko Kui’s earlier work, showcasing her creative journey long before Delicious in Dungeon became a global hit, when she was simply publishing on her own website. There are early illustrations and concept art, behind-the-scenes materials, sketches and manuscripts and even artist interviews and commentary. And looking at her previous work, it’s basically a creative road map to what would become Delicious in Dungeon. You can see her immediate interest in monsters, fantasy and even cooking.

After the traditional gallery section, the real adventure begins. You’re no longer just looking at artwork, you’re exploring THE dungeon! The Labyrinth Exploration section recreates iconic scenes from Delicious in Dungeon, making you feel feel like you’ve joined Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, and Senshi on their adventure.

There are life-sized fantasy environments, monster displays and most importantly elaborately recreated monster cuisine. If you’re familiar with the series, you’ll recognize many of Senshi’s famous recipes brought to life as realistic display pieces. They’re equal parts fascinating and slightly unsettling. Particularly the “Jack-o’-Lantern Potage and Sauteed Dryad Buds with Cheese” and “Candied Mandrake.” And yet one look at the “Let’s Cutlet the Dragon to Pieces” and I was suddenly hungry for lunch.

One unique feature that I really enjoyed in this exhibition was an interactive QR code photo mission that really helps immerse you further into the realm of Delicious in Dungeon. There are 6 QR codes scattered throughout the exhibition to unlock interactive monster-themed content and complete exploration missions. Each mission unlocks a monster dish that you can take an AR photo with and download on to your phone. And if you finish all six missions and you’ll receive a limited-edition exhibition gift at the end. *SPOILER ALERT* it’s a set of super cute bookmarks.

And like any great anime exhibition, there’s gift shop at the end. The shop isn’t massive, but it has a nice selection of official merch including acrylic stands, character keychains, t-shirts and a few Korea exclusive goods. Some items are only available during the Seoul run, so if you’re a fan be sure to take a good look. Personally, I couldn’t leave with out the frog suit manga panel art print. Cracks me up every time.

So, whether you’re a longtime fan of Laios and the gang or simply love immersive anime exhibitions, this is one of Seoul’s must visit pop-ups this season. Don’t miss out!
