It’s never fun being sick and it’s even worse when you can’t communicate with your doctor, so here’s just a little basic helpful Korean for when you need to visit a doctor or go to a pharmacy.
- Q: 어디가 아프십니까? (uh-di-ga ap-eu-sim-ni-kka) Where does it hurt?
- A: 배가 아파요. (ba-ga apa-yo) I have a stomachache.
- 머리가 아파요. (muh-ri-ga apa-yo) I have a headache.
- 목이 아파요. (mog-ee apa-yo) I have a sore throat.
- 콧물이 나요. (kon-moor-ee na-yo) I have a runny nose.
- 기침이 나요. (gi-chim-ee na-yo) I have a cough.
- 몸살이에요. (mom-sar-ee-eh-yo) My body aches.
- 열이 있습니다. (yeor-ee iss-seum-ni-da) I have a fever.
- 구역질이 납니다. (goo-yuk-jir-ee nam-ni-da) I feel nauseated.
- 토해요. (to-he-yo) I’ve been throwing up.
- 설사해요. (sul-sa-he-yo) I have diarrhea
- 속이 쓰려요. (sog-ee sur-ryuh-yo) I have an upset stomach.
If all else fails, can just point to wherever it hurts and say:
- 여기가 아파요. (yuh-gi-ga apa-yo) It hurts here.
When you buy medicine you may want to know when to take it, in that case you may ask:
- Q: 이 약은 어떻게 먹어요? (ee yag-un uh-ddug-he mug-uh-yo) How should I take this medicine?
Usually the response will be:
- A: 하루 세 번 드세요. (ha-ru se bun deu-se-yo) Take it three times a day. *you can replace the underlined part with any other number
