Cheap Eats, Korean Convenience Store Style

One of my favorite things about living in Korea is being able to have a full on meal at a convenience store. It’s not just about the colorful displays or wide varieties of foods available at cheap prices, it’s that the menu is always changing and if you don’t have a favorite item yet, you’ll find one eventually.

A variety of Korean convenience store food items with price labels, including instant noodles, snacks, a soda, and other packaged goods, totaling 13,300 KRW.

Stopping by a convenience store for some drinks with friends, an ice cream with your significant other or even lunch with your coworkers is pretty common here in Korea. And since most convenience stores are open 24 hrs, it gives locals and tourists an easy and affordable option when you’re feeling peckish late at night or in the early mornings.

We found ourselves in just this situation the other day when we realized it was 2 AM and we hadn’t had dinner yet. So we walked over to our local GS25 and decided to see if we could get ourselves a full meal with only 7,000 KRW.

True to convenience store culture, we weren’t the only ones out and about. There were tourists grabbing ramen, friends out for a few beers and couples eating ice cream. Not to mention a constant flow of people coming in and out for late-night snacks. Luckily, the store was completely restocked and we had no trouble putting together a satisfying meal on a budget.

Our final tally was 13,300 KRW which comes out to 9.59 USD for two people who were pleasantly full and satisfied after a meal of ramen, gimbap, onigiri, donuts, cola and a mango iced tea.

Could it have been healthier? Sure. But it tasted wonderful.
