5 Best Disney Rides Outside the US

California may be the origin of Walt Disney’s dream, but with four other Disneyland parks outside the US, some of the best rides designed by Disney imagineers lie abroad. Here are our favorites!

5. Fantasia Carousel is the most unique Disney carrousel in the world (Shanghai)

It’s not common knowledge, but every Disney park in the world has a medieval themed carousel. Disneyland in Anaheim has a King Arthur Carrousel while Disney World has a Prince Charming Regal Carrousel. Except in Shanghai where it has a Fantasia theme. That’s right, in Shanghai the horses are multi-colored pegasi from the classic Disney movie. It’s an unexpected treat and one that every die-hard Disney fan’ll enjoy.

4. Avengers Assemble: Flight Force is more than a Marvel-themed Space Mountain in Paris

Paris held a few surprises, but this was one that absolutely rocked our socks. Most reviews called it a bumpy reskin of Space Mountain, but it is absolutely so much more. This is a dark ride rollercoaster with loops and an amazing queue that builds the story of Iron Man and Captain Marvel fighting a Kree attack. Unlike the Iron Man Experience in Hong Kong, we get lots of cameos from Marvel actors responding to a call for help. The ride was designed to incorporate it’s theming (unlike Space Mountain’s Star Wars redesign which was added later) which results in a much more complete experience.

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure in Shanghai is Rise of the Resistance for Pirates fans

We are absolute fans of the original ride in Anaheim, but Shanghai’s updated version of the ride is an experience. It brings together so many different technologies to create an immersive ride that puts you in the middle of a pirate battle. It’s Rise of the Resistance, but for Pirates fans. The boats are still on tracks, but they move sideways and backwards, reacting to explosions and the push and pull of the waves. Instead of floating through a story, you’re front and center to a battle between Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones.

2. Mystic Manor in Hong Kong is a totally unique ride unlike any other

Hong Kong’s Mystic Manor is our number two pick, but just barely. It carries a lot of the hallmarks of the Haunted Mansion, but has its own completely different and incredibly fun take on a manor come to life with spiritual energy. It is also the first example of a trackless ride in a Disney park proving that the House of Mouse can get it right on its first try. The ride was originally conceived for Hong Kong due to Chinese cultural beliefs. And the result is one of the best rides at any Disney park in the world.

1. The Phantom Manor in Paris is the ultimate Haunted Mansion experience

Our most recent Disney trip was to Disneyland Paris. And while we were disappointed with a few ride closures, thankfully, we were able to ride the Phantom Manor both during the day and at night. Phantom Manor features the story of a heartbroken bride-to-be whose intended is murdered by a demonic phantom. While the Haunted Mansion alludes to its haunting story (with many variations and interpretations), Phantom Manor wears its story on its sleeve to create an unforgettable experience. I know I’ll never forget the sight of a ghostly bride waiting for her beloved.
