The Hyundai Seoul Christmas Market: Atelier de Noël

One of the most popular Christmas markets in Seoul is the one held every year at The Hyundai Seoul in Yeoido. This visually stunning Christmas market pop-up is held on the 5th floor and features a new theme every year. This year’s theme is Atelier de Noël and it engulfs you in a woodsy Christmas workshop wonderland.

Like last year, if you missed out on early reservations, you can still sign up for the virtual queue on-site by scanning the QR code in front of the pop-up entrance. If you don’t have a Korean phone number or KakaoTalk, you can ask to receive a physical ticket at the entrance to reserve your spot in line as well.

Last year’s theme Le Grand Theatre was a massive detailed recreation of a turn-of-the-century circus show with anthropamorphic animals running the circus. It featured several different tents which offer small shows featuring 2D cutout characters walking tight ropes, hanging from rings and dancing across stages. But this year, they’re taking it back to a more classic whimsical, cozy Christmas village vibe.

The walk through features five themed cottages and each spot feels like stepping into a different little Christmas story. There’s Santa’s House, a letter-writing workshop, a gift-wrapping workshop, a packaging workshop, and even “Rudolph’s House.” Every room is decorated with holiday touches like pine cones, wreaths, wooden toys, cozy lights, owls carrying letters and animatronic woodland creatures, little details everywhere that make the place feel truly alive.

Each cottage is a photo zone, which means definite wait times to take pictures and view each one. Of course those times will vary depending on when you choose to visit. Naturally, weekends tend to be the most crowded, but typically it empties out a bit more in the late evening.

While typically this pop-up hosts a variety of photo zones and shops selling all sorts of Christmas decorations and treats, this year is definitely more Christmas than market. This pop-up focuses heavily on photo zones, with only one store selling a small selection of holiday snacks and teddy bears. But if you’re looking to capture the perfect holiday photo this year, this would definitely be the spot.
