FUK Coffee in Fukuoka

If this cafe’s name made you raise an eyebrow, you’re in good company. FUK COFFEE is a bit tongue in cheek, and intentionally so. It’s named after the IATA airport code “FUK” for Fukuoka Airport, and you’ll see that theme threaded everywhere: latte art planes, boarding-pass-inspired branding, and a vibe that’s part airport lounge, part cozy meet-up spot. In fact it’s so popular that it’s draw quite a following, that kind that will wait outside in the blazing heat just for a seat.

So other and the quirky name, what’s the real draw? That would have to be their insanely rich and creamy custard pudding topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, all bathed in a rich caramel that manages to be both sweet and slightly bitter. It was the perfect dessert side-kick to my hot brown sugar latte, and the kind of tasty surprise that’ll haunt my taste buds for years to come. Okay… that may be a bit dramatic, but you get my point.

There are a few locations, but I went to the one in Hakata because it was near my hotel. This location is tiny with only about 5 “regular” tables and 5 “window seats” which have you sitting on a metal rail. I popped in on 3 different days, once when it was completely packed, another when only window seating was available and I finally lucked out with an actual table on my third try. That metal rail is a young woman’s game and I wasn’t about to subject my glute to that level of discomfort. Honestly it seems purposeful, as though to keep people from staying too long.

Additionally, I had read reviews about the staff being rude. Since I popped in 3 different times I can confirm it’s the luck of the draw. One time I was “greeted” by some rude snotty girl who seemed annoyed by my very presence and another time it was just a “normal” guy I guess. Either way, do not expect a warm welcome here, the staff is generally nonchalant and bare minimum at best. If you go, go for a good cup of coffee and dessert.

And if you want to take a bit of Fuk Coffee home they have some merch for sale like t-shirts and hoodies featuring aviation-themed graphics and their signature code motif plus cool extras like tote bags, keychains, and cotton drawstring pouches. Gift bags combining their own roast beans or drip bags with cute merch are a solid pick if you’re hunting for a gift. While cute, a lot of the stuff was a bit too pricey IMHO, but I did pick up a small cotton drawstring pouch with their iconic logo to remember our time together.

Where is FUK Coffee?

FUK Coffee is located just outside Kushida Shrine Station in Fukuoka. It’s on the first floor and it wasn’t hard for me to find, but I recommend using the Google Map link below just in case.
