Jeju-do: Loveland (제주러브랜드) **NSFW**

Loveland is what I consider to be one of Korea’s little anomalies. In a country where the talk of sex is often taboo and even even proper sexual education is practically non existent, Loveland seems a bit out of place (to say the least).

After the Korean War, Jeju-do became a popular honeymoon destination for newlyweds (and remains one today). Though it’s not as common now, many couples at that time were a product of arranged marriages. As a result, some hotels on the island would offer entertainment that featured more erotic elements to help the newly married couples unwind. The performers were considered “professional icebreakers.” With this in mind, it seemed only natural for a place like Loveland to be erected in Jeju.

Loveland is an outdoor sex-themed sculpture park that showcases around 140 works of art. Although it opened its doors in November of 2004, graduate students from Hongik University in Seoul were already hard at work creating all the art for the park back in 2002.

The park is loosely organized into different little themed clusters. Some are inspired by different time periods, masquerades, cartoons or just comedic takes on life. I personally like the collection of voluptuous aujmmas with insatiable appetites. These sculptures are huge, detailed and the concept is amusing to say the least.

If you’re looking to make memories via photographs, there are also lots of photo zones, some more provocative than others. So if you’re looking to ride off into the sunset on a giant “salami,” they’ve got you covered. If you’re looking for something a bit more turned down, the 2 lovers sharing a first kiss is a super popular spot for couples.

The park itself is an impressive size, covering an area roughly the size of two soccer fields. While most of the park is outdoors, there is an indoor gift shop for all your bedroom needs and a small museum with some very cool clay dioramas. The Korean take on the iconic pottery scene from the movie “Ghost,” is not to be missed.

There’s also a snack shop at the far end of the park that will totally round out your experience. Here you can purchase the exclusive 거시기빵 (goshigi bbang) which are anatomically correct yellow bean filled breads. For ₩3,000 you can get 1 pair of “lady lumps” and two pairs of “twigs and giggle berries.” The ahjummas who work there are all to excited to see the reactions of the customers when given the snacks.

If you’re planning on checking out Love Land, I think it looks most interesting in the early evening while there is still some daylight (and less mosquitoes). However many prefer to go once the sun goes down, then you get all sorts of tour groups, bashful college girls, groups of giggling parents and of course honeymooners and couples. It’s a pretty humorous experience overall. Definitely one of a kind.
